Memorial Day & The Flag-Folding Ceremony

Folded-Flag

As we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day today and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, let us consider one aspect of a memorial service. At the passing of most military veterans, there is a memorial service. In many of these services, there is “The folding of the flag.” During this time, the audience is focused; we focus on the flag and the two conducting the Flag-Folding Ceremony.

Years ago, the Flag-Folding Ceremony was created. Pause for a few minutes and reflect on the meaning of each of the twelve folds.

  1. The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
  2. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in the eternal life.
  3. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for the defense of our country to attain a peace throughout the world.
  4. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for divine guidance.
  5. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.”
  6. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
  7. The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
  8. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day.
  9. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
  10. The tenth fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.
  11. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  12. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of the national motto, “In God We Trust.” After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms, we enjoy today.

May these words add special meaning to your Memorial Day celebration this year. Have a great day!

(Take note I will repost this two more times over the Memorial Day weekend so that others will be able to appreciate these spiritual and patriotic truths.)

Your First Moments in Heaven

What will your first moments in heaven be like? As the song says, “I can only imagine.” What will be your greatest surprise about heaven? I can think of a few.

  • Who will be there,
  • Who will not be there, and
  • Why we dreaded the transition so much

What will be your greatest surprise? Select one from above or add yours below.[vfb id=7]

The Seven Sayings of Christ on the Cross: The Introduction

The Seven Sayings of Christ on The Cross

On the night and during the night before Jesus was crucified, many important events transpired:

  • He gathers with the men in the Upper Room
  • They partake of the Passover
  • Jesus washes the disciples feet
  • He institutes the Lord’s Supper
  • Judas leaves to do his deed
  • Jesus tells of Peter’s denial
  • Jesus tells of His soon death and departure
  • Jesus and the disciples go to Gethsemane
  • Jesus prays His High Priestly prayer
  • Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss
  • Jesus is arrested

This is only a brief telling of all that happened that night. More information will follow.

As we consider all this, let’s remember: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Sleep well. Jesus is on the Throne

Happy Friday morning to you!

Next Friday, April 3rd, we will celebrate one of the greatest days for the Christian. It is the day Jesus died on the Cross for us. There He paid a debt He did not owe; a price we could not pay. Although it was a horrible six hours, it is the ultimate picture of His love for us. As He was on the Cross, the Word tells us “For the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame …”

On that Good Friday, beginning at 9:00 a.m., I will post the seven sayings of Jesus on the Cross (one each hour). You would know that Jesus did not make these statements in these one-hour increments but they will be posted in order on that schedule that we might pause and reflect on each one.

Because of what Jesus did on the Cross for us, it is not only Good Friday for us it is a Great Friday! Because even though it will be Friday, Sunday is coming.

Have a great day in Him!

“How to Get the Heaven” (tract)

This is an easy to customize track (as a Word document). Once you purchase the track form and it arrives in your inbox, save it as a Word document. Then, you fill in the blank and print out as many copies as you might want or need. The recommended paper quality would be that of a card stock type thickness of paper.

One use example would be, if you live in Nashville, Tennessee, the tract could be customized to read: How to Get to Heaven from Nashville, Tennessee. All the rest of the tract information would remain the same. This is one-time purchase item that can be customized to use anywhere you might live or serve on a evangelistic or mission endeavor.
